Flying with your pets is never simple. From airline restrictions and regulations to follow, extra fees and heightened security, traveling with your dog or cat can be a hassle especially this summer when the temperature is way up high.
To keep your pets safe when traveling by plane, here are some guidelines:
- Familiarize yourself with pet air travel regulation
Before you even book a flight, do a research on the air travel regulation for flying with dogs. Individual airlines vary on certain restrictions. When booking a flight on which you wish to bring your pet, call the airline directly to make the reservation and confirm that there is a space available for your pet on the flight.
- Choose an early morning or late evening flight when traveling with your pet this summer.
Some dog breeds are sensitive with temperatures. Snub-nosed breeds can only be transported at temperatures up to 75F.
- Buy an airline approved pet carrier few days before the flight
Your pet needs to get used to the carrier days before the flight to avoid further stress or anxiety attack. The carrier should be big enough for your pet to stand, turn around, or lie down. Don’t forget to mark it with “Live Animal” on top and side of the carrier with arrows indicating the proper standing position.
- Call your airlines and make sure that they have climate controlled van service for pickup and delivery of live animals to or from the aircraft, animal holding areas, and cargo facilities.
Your pet can be exposed to intense heat during transfer that’s why it is important for you to make sure that your airline handles live animals well during summer. Appropriate handling procedures on live animals during summer are extremely important due to long wait times in the loading area and on the tarmac.
- Provide water for your dog throughout the flight
Keep your dog hydrated during air travel. For dogs in the cargo hold, it is better to add ice cubes in their water bowl in case all the liquid get spilled during transport.
Traveling with dogs or any pets can be a stressful experience when you are not totally prepared. Make sure to follow guidelines and also try to research more to ensure safety and comfort.
