Apartment living with pets can be a challenge. The smaller space with little or no access to the outside can make things difficult at times but there are many ways to successfully share an apartment with a pet.
Assuming your pet has met all the requirements set out by your pet-friendly apartment management, you will need to do some extra work to keep your pet from getting bored and causing trouble for you or your neighbors.
Most apartments that permit pets will allow small dogs, cats and certain kinds of birds. If you have had pets in the past in a house with a yard, apartment living with a pet, particularly if your apartment is a very small one-bedroom design, may not work out. If the pet does fit your small apartment lifestyle, you will need to provide some extras to keep your pet from creating problems that can affect your new home.
For cats, this may mean becoming an indoor cat exclusively. This is not bad for cats especially if your pet has not been outside before or has limited access to the outdoors because of where your apartment is located in the building you live. You will need to provide plenty of exercise opportunities which mean a lot of climbing toys to allow it to use natural instincts such as stalking and pouncing.
For dogs it will be different. You will still need to provide exercise opportunities and that means going for a lot of walks during the day. If there is a dog park near your apartment make use of it and if you are away all day and can’t be back home midday, use a dog walker service if there is one where you live. If you live on the ground floor, letting your dog out for bathroom breaks or quick walks will be much easier.
If you have a balcony as part of your apartment be sure to either harness or leash your pet to prevent injury from a fall or don’t let them out on the balcony at all.
Birds are probably best left in large cages in apartments so they can still get exercise.
Bringing a pet into your apartment is not impossible, but does require some work in order to make it work.
Tip: Invest in a good vacuum cleaner to keep loose furs away!
