Darndest Stuff Your Pet Can Eat
Have you ever wondered where your favorite pearl earrings are? Or your phone charger? If you are living with a fur baby, chances are, he/she ate it all!
Being an experienced pet owner, we’ve had our fair share of experience regarding pets eating the darndest things.
1. Ribbon
Number one in our list is the ribbon. This was perhaps the most tragic accident that ever happened in our household. Our 1 yr old cat ingested more than a yard of ribbon (while we were sleeping!). It wasn’t like it was out in the open. The ribbon was neatly folded and wrapped up in plastic. Never underestimate your cat. They are very observant and smart.
Curiosity got the better of her and she shredded the plastic cover with her claws and started playing with it. She accidentally ingested the whole thing and next thing you know she was having rectal bleeding. Surgery didn’t go well and she passed away. Ribbons are now banned at home and I don’t think I’ll ever look at ribbons the same way. RIP dear Catherine.
2. Money
Keep your moolas away from your pets if you don’t want it to be his/her dinner! Everyone likes money. Including your pets. Our Poodle prefers $100 over $1. Who knew Poodles can count?
3. Jewelries
Looking for your precious pearls? Ask Fido what he had for lunch. This is one of the most common stuff that dogs swallow in a household. If you are trying on your jewelries, make sure your dogs are not around in case you drop it. It will be in their mouth before you can even pick it up!
4. Socks
There’s something about dogs and their love for dirty socks on the floor. Heck even our cat loves to chew on dirty socks or shoes. You think they just love to play with it? Wrong. They would eat it in a heartbeat. Don’t ask us why coz we have no idea at all. So if you love your pets (and your wallet), try not to leave your socks all over the floor where they can reach it.
5. Phone charger
I can’t count the times I have bought a new charger cord because my Poodle chewed it to bits. Luckily for her, she can never swallow the whole thing. But I’ve heard of bigger dogs ingesting a phone charger.
Prevent Your Pets from Eating the Darndest Things
There’s really no surefire way to prevent your fur babies from eating everything in sight. But making sure they are eating a healthy diet can help. There’s a medical issue on dogs called Pica. It is a condition where your dog craves for non-food items.
You should get your pets checked out by your local veterinarian. There are several causes such as malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, diabetes, or thyroid disease. However, it can also be non-medical like boredom, not getting enough exercise, wanting attention, and many more.
Since you can’t monitor your pet’s activities 24/7, you should consider keeping your pets in a crate when you are not around to see what they are up to.
